Why Prenatal Chiropractic Care Matters

Chiropractic care during pregnancy is a safe and effective way to relieve pain, support pelvic alignment, and promote overall wellness for both mother and baby.

Getting adjustments during pregnancy is one of the most important things women can do for herself and her child. Chiropractic care provides a non-invasive way of treating conditions that are associated with pregnancy including sciatica, lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder tension and headaches.

One of the most important areas to address for easing labor and delivery is the position of the pelvic bones. If the pelvis is in the proper position, back labor may be less frequent and the chance of having a breech presentation may be reduced. In a typical prenatal visit, the patient is adjusted to ensure pelvic alignment.

If you’re looking for wellness care, chiropractic can help with that too! Regular visits can help keep your spine and nervous system in good condition, reducing the risk of injury or long-term health issues.

Every body and every pregnancy is different. Finding a prenatal chiropractor near you who will listen and respect your unique pregnancy story can make all the difference.

Chiropractic Care for Breech Baby Presentation: Webster Technique During Pregnancy

One of the most effective prenatal chiropractic techniques is the Webster Technique, a specialized approach designed to optimize pelvic balance and reduce intrauterine restrictions. This method has been widely recognized for its role in improving fetal positioning and supporting a natural birth experience.

The Webster Technique is a specialized chiropractic approach designed to optimize pelvic alignment and function. This technique focuses on assessing and gently addressing sacral and pelvic imbalances, which can lead to uterine torsion and restricted space for the baby. By restoring proper biomechanics, the Webster Technique aims to create an ideal environment for fetal positioning, potentially reducing the likelihood of breech presentations or other complications. It involves specific, gentle adjustments tailored to the unique needs of pregnant patients, enhancing comfort, promoting balance, and supporting a smoother, more natural birthing process. This safe and effective method is widely recognized by chiropractors specializing in prenatal care. Dr Keri Chiappaino is a Webster Certified Chiropractor and an ICPA member specializing in prenatal and pediatric care.

Postpartum Chiropractic Care: Restoring Balance After Baby

Just as chiropractic care supports your body through pregnancy, it plays a vital role in postpartum recovery. The physical changes of childbirth can leave new mothers with lingering discomfort, misalignment, and muscle tension. Postpartum chiropractic adjustments help restore balance, alleviate pain, and improve posture — especially for breastfeeding mothers.

Postpartum chiropractic care is an essential tool for helping mothers recover from the physical stress of childbirth.

Optimal healing after delivery. During pregnancy and delivery, the pelvis and spine undergo significant changes, often resulting in misalignments that can lead to discomfort and hinder the healing process. Postpartum chiropractic adjustments focus on realigning the pelvis and spine, reducing pain, and promoting optimal healing.

Improved well-being and pain relief. Postpartum chiropractic adjustments can help address common postpartum challenges such as back pain, pelvic discomfort, upper back pain, wrist tension and neck pain.

Better posture. Chiropractic care improves posture, which is particularly beneficial for breastfeeding and all the challenges that come along with being a new parent!

By supporting the body’s recovery, postpartum chiropractic care helps mothers feel stronger, more balanced, and able to give themselves the much-needed self-care they deserve!!

More Ways How we Support Women During and After Pregnancy

Pregnancy and the postpartum period bring significant changes — not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. Many expectant and new mothers experience mood fluctuations, heightened stress, and sleep disturbances. While these challenges are common, they shouldn’t be ignored. In addition to chiropractic care, we offer neurofeedback therapy for pregnancy and beyond — a safe, drug-free solution that helps balance the brain and promote emotional well-being.

How Neurofeedback Helps with Postpartum Challenges

The postpartum period can be overwhelming, with a combination of hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and the demands of caring for a newborn. Many mothers struggle with:

Postpartum Anxiety: Racing thoughts, excessive worry, and difficulty relaxing, often leading to sleep disturbances.

Postpartum Depression (PPD): Persistent sadness, mood swings, and feelings of disconnection from the baby or loved ones.

Overwhelm and Burnout: Mental exhaustion from constant caregiving, leading to physical and emotional fatigue.

Anger & Emotional Dysregulation: Unexplained irritability, outbursts of frustration, and difficulty managing emotions.

Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling or staying asleep, even when the baby is sleeping, due to an overactive nervous system.

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive brain training technique that helps the brain self-regulate and return to a more balanced state. Using real-time monitoring of brain activity, this therapy gently encourages healthier brainwave patterns, leading to improved emotional stability, focus, and relaxation.

Neurofeedback offers an effective alternative for pregnant and lactating mothers who are concerned about using psychotropic medications. Many expectant and new mothers face challenges such as anxiety, sleep disturbances, or postpartum depression but are hesitant to take medications due to potential side effects or risks to their baby. Neurofeedback provides a safe, non-invasive solution by helping the brain regulate itself naturally, without introducing chemicals into the body. This makes it an ideal choice for those seeking relief from mental health challenges while prioritizing the safety of their child during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Unlike medications, which may carry risks of dependency or adverse effects, neurofeedback works by training the brain to achieve healthier patterns, promoting relaxation, emotional balance, and improved cognitive function. This drug-free approach not only addresses symptoms effectively but also fosters long-term resilience and mental wellness. For mothers looking for a holistic, side-effect-free alternative, neurofeedback offers a powerful tool to navigate the emotional and physical demands of motherhood with confidence and peace of mind. At our Smithtown wellness center, we understand that motherhood is both beautiful and demanding. Our chiropractic care and neurofeedback therapy work together to support you physically, mentally, and emotionally—so you can feel strong, balanced, and ready to embrace the journey of motherhood with confidence.

FAQs

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Yes, chiropractic care is generally safe during pregnancy when performed by a chiropractor trained in prenatal care. Chiropractors use gentle, pregnancy-specific techniques to ensure the safety of both the mother and baby. Chiropractic adjustments help alleviate back pain, improve pelvic alignment, and support overall comfort during pregnancy. Specialized techniques like the Webster Technique are specifically designed to optimize pelvic balance and create the best environment for the growing baby.

When should I start prenatal chiropractic care?

You can start prenatal chiropractic care at any point during your pregnancy. The sooner the better! Many women begin care as soon as they find out they are pregnant to support their changing bodies and address early discomforts. However, others seek care later in pregnancy to manage back pain, sciatica, or to prepare for labor.

Are there contraindications for chiropractic care during pregnancy?

As with any treatment a careful history, evaluation and examination is performed prior to receiving any care. If there is any reason a patient should not undergo care that will be discussed directly to the patient.

How soon after delivery can I see a chiropractor?

As soon as you feel comfortable after delivery, often within a few days or weeks postpartum you can come in for care. Postpartum chiropractic care helps realign the pelvis and spine, which may have shifted during pregnancy and childbirth. Early care can alleviate back pain, promote healing, and improve posture, which is particularly helpful for breastfeeding and caring for your new bundle of love!

Can my baby also receive chiropractic care?

Yes, babies can benefit from chiropractic care!  Pediatric chiropractic care involves extremely gentle adjustments to address misalignments caused by the birthing process. It can support common infant issues such as colic, constipation, difficulty nursing, reflux, torticollis and sleep challenges. The adjustment looks like an extremely gentle massage and the amount of pressure used is equivalent to the pressure you use to test if a tomato is ripe! Babies often fall asleep and get extremely relaxed. A relaxed baby is one who sleeps well so the impact on the family can be life changing!

What is the “popping” or “cracking” sound during the adjustment?

Chiropractors adjust the vertebrae (bones in your back) and when that happens occasionally you will hear a “cracking” noise. This noise is caused by gases that shift in between the joints when they are adjusted. The same thing occurs when people “pop” their knuckles. There is no significance to the sound.

Does it hurt to get adjusted?

No. Before your adjustment, muscle massage and other muscle relaxing techniques are applied to lessen the amount of pressure applied in your adjustment. Force is never used during an adjustment and the patient is talked through every step of the adjustment. We work within your comfort level.

Can children and seniors get adjusted?

Children lead physically active lives; falls or injuries from sports or the activity in the course of their day can bring on soreness, back or neck pain. Chiropractic care can help facilitate healing, promote a healthy nervous system, and boost your child’s immune system. Other conditions that can be improved through chiropractic care include ear infections, bedwetting, asthma, allergies, and infantile colic.

Seniors can also improve their health and well-being through chiropractic care. Regular care provides seniors with pain relief, increased range of motion in the spine and limbs, and decreased joint degeneration. Additionally, improvements in balance and coordination through chiropractic care help lower the incidence of falling. Best of all, chiropractic care is natural and drug-free, which eliminates the risk of over-medicating as well as any side effects due to a combination of prescription drugs.

Can I see a chiropractor if I am pregnant?

Getting adjustments during pregnancy is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your baby. Chiropractic care provides a non-invasive way of treating conditions that are associated with additional weight and stress being placed on the expectant mother’s frame including sciatica, lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder tension and headaches. Chiropractic can also help ease labor and delivery. If your pelvis is in the proper position, back labor is less frequent and your chance of having a breech presentation is reduced. If your baby is in the breech position, gentle chiropractic care can help by repositioning the pelvic bones, which allows the baby to turn naturally and on its own into the proper birthing position.
