If you or your child have been diagnosed with ADHD, or focus, organization, and calm are constant battles, you’ve probably tried a few things already.
Medication. Therapy. Supplements. Maybe even lifestyle changes or endless planner systems.
But here’s the truth: You can’t fix what you can’t see.
Most ADHD treatments focus on managing symptoms. But to create lasting change, you have to understand what’s actually happening inside the brain. That’s where a qEEG brain map comes in.
What Exactly Is a qEEG?
qEEG stands for quantitative electroencephalogram.
It’s a completely safe, non-invasive method of measuring your brain’s electrical activity aka your brainwaves. Think of it as a high definition map showing which areas of your brain are working too hard, and which are underperforming.
During the session:
- You sit comfortably in a chair.
- A cap, similar to a swim cap, with small sensors is placed on your scalp.
- You relax quietly with your eyes open and closed while the system records.
- The data is then analyzed using advanced software that compares your brainwave patterns to a database of typical results for your age.
The result? A color-coded map that reveals where your brain is running too fast, too slow, or just out of sync.
What the Colors of the qEEG Brain Map Mean
Every color on your brain map represents a different level of activity:
- Blue: Lower activity — these areas may be underactive, often linked to brain fog, inattention, or lack of motivation.
- Red: Higher activity — these areas may be overactive, often linked to racing thoughts, anxiety, or impulsivity.
- Green: Balanced activity — the “sweet spot” where focus, calm, and processing work in sync.
When we look at a qEEG, we can see the signature patterns often associated with attention and regulation challenges.
For example, people with ADHD may show:
- Excess slow-wave (theta) activity in frontal regions (hard to sustain attention).
- Reduced beta activity (difficulty with alert focus).
- Asymmetry between hemispheres (imbalance between attention and inhibition).
Everyone’s map is unique, that’s what makes it so powerful!
Why This Matters for ADHD
ADHD isn’t a character flaw. It’s a difference in how the brain regulates itself.
Traditional approaches often focus on managing behaviors or boosting chemicals, but a qEEG lets us see the root of those behaviors.
When you understand your brain’s exact pattern, you can create a training plan designed specifically for it.
That’s what we do at New Beginnings Wellness Center in Smithtown, NY. We use your qEEG as a roadmap for neurofeedback training.
Instead of guessing what your brain needs, we let the data lead.
From Brain Map to Brain Training
Once we’ve completed your qEEG, we review your results in detail.
You’ll see the map, understand the key regions involved, and learn how they relate to your specific challenges.
Then, we build a customized neurofeedback training plan that includes a series of sessions where your brain learns to regulate its own activity through real time feedback.
In other words:
You’re teaching your brain to focus, stay calm, and self correct, naturally with long lasting changes.
What You’ll Learn from Your Brain Map

Your qEEG report helps answer questions like:
- Why is it so hard to start tasks, even ones you care about?
- Why can you hyperfocus sometimes but not when you want to?
- Why do certain environments or stressors instantly throw off your concentration?
- Why do medications help some days but not others?
Each of these has a neurological fingerprint. Once we see it, we can measure progress, track change, and celebrate wins you can actually see on the map.
